Building resilience in the Saugeen Region.

Another option to the social/capitalist poles would be distributism - which is the shared ownership of all capital assets, like factories, businesses etc. The common good or 'commons' once owned water, air, sunshine. But now big companies own fresh water, energy, solar roghts, seed patents, technology patents etc. Indirectly they also own food or sustenance rights - that is, if you can't pay, you do without. An example of the kind of ideal I propose, is the Mondragon Co-op movement in Spain. They have achieved 'community' ownership of factories, banks & social services. An inspiring site to visit.

We have had the Cooperative movement in Ontario for decades. There is nothing stopping individuals from working together to achieve "Community" ownership of factories/businesses, the Credit Unions are one example, the UCO is another one which evenually failed. What can history tell us on lessons to be learned? I strongly disagree with Justin Skultety comment "give up the dream of apparent ownership rights to resources from the few.. and to hand it into the hands of the many" I am all for the copperative approach so long as it doesn't hinder the ability of the individual if he or she so chooses to supply a product to the local community. We need only read history aka USSR to see what happens when Ownership rights don't exist. Food rotten in the fields.

will look into this movement in Spain..Thank you for sharing that!

It is much like the cause and effect of creating value out of shortage, by those that have bought in to the assets earlier then those that have not. Good example is diamonds....no true value unless given one through trade...entire market share would collapse if the diamond mines where opened up and they released the land rights...as there are giant reserves that are held in order to create a need for them. Now....diamonds are no near as important as fresh water, seeds, healthy food, clean soil, and clean efficient energy. These are also needs to a healthy lifestyle.....and let me not forget that we have worked this hard thus far in order to provide a better lifestyle for our future generations...and as of yet...we have given them what appears to be insurmountable odds stacked against them to have just that.

It will take a sweeping movement of selflessness to give up the dream of apparent ownership rights to resources from the few...and to hand it into the hands of the many....and it will also take an assertive approach from the 90% of the masses.

These are people that need to be invigorated in order to make this type of consciousness revolution occur.
