Shane Jolley Heidi's Bar - "Derivatives 101" or "Drink Now, Pay Later"

I don't know who wrote this, but it explains the credit crisis in...well....terms that even a drunk can understand.

Heidi is the proprietor of a bar in Detroit. She realizes that virtually all of her customers are unemployed alcoholics and, as such, can no longer afford to patronize her

Shane Jolley Community...why bother?

The Oxford dictionary defines community as, “a group of interdependents growing or living together, or occupying a specified habitat". Webster adds, “joint ownership or participation”. The idea here is not only a mutually beneficial arrangement of a group of people, but one where each contributes and no man or woman is an island.Continue

Gerald Poechman Distributism

Another option to the social/capitalist poles would be distributism - which is the shared ownership of all capital assets, like factories, businesses etc. The common good or 'commons' once owned water, air, sunshine. But now big companies own fresh water, energy, solar roghts, seed patents, technology patents etc. Indirectly they also own food or sustenance rights - that is, if you can't pay, you do without. An example of the kind of ideal I propose, is the Mondragon Co-op movement in Spain. The

Shane Jolley Principles of Community Based Economics

We live in an economic and political world characterized by several overarching themes. First, the need for ever-increasing and faster economic “growth”. Second, a rapidly increasing scale in terms of the size and power of business and government. Finally, the continuous concentration of wealth and power in the hands of fewer aContinue

Shane Jolley A Great Day for the Local Food Movement.

Today is a great day for the local food movement. Durham farmer Michael Schmidt was acquitted today on all charges related to his cow-share program. Members can now legally continue to obtain and consume raw milk through cow-share programs as they are technically "owners", not purchasers, of raw milk. Th… Continue

Shane Jolley Welcome to the new LocalMotive Project website.

If there's one thing I dislike intensely, it's long hours at the desk, and if you have the web-skills that I have (pretty much zippo!) then creating a website erases days from your life. Snow shoveling never looked so appealing. But thanks to the help of Ryan (the master) Wiseman, we now have a network/workspace that I think is as good as it comes; at least in terms of what I can work with. No more weight loss ads, fake virus warnings, and incompatibilities with obsolete browsers. Just pure, sw… Continue
