The LocalMotive Project

Building resilience in the Saugeen Region.

To start a non-profit corporate venture (with paid employees) with the goal to become a major supplier of environmental supportive (compostable) products, replacing “paper” plates, plastic cups and cutlery used
by festivals in Grey/Bruce. A long-range goal is to use local materials to
product these products and replace any imports to Grey/Bruce.

Market

A market study would have to be completed. A good start would be to develop a list of local festivals and determine their level of interest and the volumes of use for each. We have an advantage with local cities and
counties which are interesting in getting more environmentally conscious but
aren’t sure how to do it. Most of these festivals are run by volunteers who would appreciate a non-profile group attempting to support this change. We would need to develop a true expert understanding of
what environmental products made sense before we approached them.

Product sourcing

Initially, The sold products would be source from away. We should be able to purchase in volumes that allow us enough buying power to be competitive, if we can get volume commitments from some of the larger festivals.

We would run a parallel, research and development program to design our own manufacturing process for compostable products using local agricultural discard (grain chaff, etc.). Agricultural discards are what most of these products are currently made from. Our newly designed and locally manufactured products would slowly replace
the purchased compostable products as we develop manufacturing capacity and
expertise.
