Yes, 7pm should be fine. Allison has cleared Books & Beans for the location and she thinks we can accommodate 20 or so people, which should do the trick.

I was considering Books and Beans for 10-15 people. If we're thinking 20 it could still probably work. But we can consider another spot. What do you have in mind, Lynn?

Hi Allison:

ARGGGHHH....I have to be out of town March 1 through 5!!! Shane had mentioned March 2 as the potential day. I knew I had to be in Toronto for a week but just didn't know until the end of last week what dates it would be. I don't know what Shane has planned for the presentation but if you would like to show The End of Suburbia as an opener to the discussion (and if Books and Beans would be agreeable) we have found it is an excellent conversation starter and it gets people fully understanding WHY the Transition concept is being presented. (Another excellent option is The Power of Community) I have The End of Suburbia and would be happy to loan it to you for that evening. Just so you know, I have posted Transition Kincardine as a mulling community on the Transition Town Google Earth site (there are two pages at this point of communities that are mulling). I also have contacts who might be very interrested in participating. Let me know if you are going to go ahead with March 2 and I will send out an invite...if you have room that is.

I am on the intiial steering committee (of 4) for Transition Teeswater but one of the hold backs for us is finding a meeting place to hold a growing collective without considerable cost-be prepared for the onslaught :) You offer it and they will come! (Our initial group included people from about 5 other communities- there is big interest out there-they might have similar ideas but not have the name of Transition Town to put to it...as long as everybody is moving in the right direction who cares what its called? (it just makes it a bit easier to present a concept that is globally recognized!)

We must meet sometime soon! If you would like the film, just let me know and I will arrange to get it to you!

Hey Lynne,

That's too bad you won't be there! Thanks for the tips and offer of the film. The details of the evening haven't been worked out yet, but End of Suburbia could be a good eye-opener -- I'm wondering if there is something a little more condense though (a 20 or 30 minute film?) to hold folks' attention.

I liked the depth of content (intro to localized economies / intro to Transition Town / practical steps), length of event (2 hours) and variety of speakers (3) at the TT Owen Sound meeting - we could model that style of presentation. As for speakers, I think we just have Shane lined up. We could see if Janice McKean or Crystal Murphy (both from Kincardine) would like to participate as speakers on initiatives currently going on in Kincardine.

What are your thoughts and ideas (including potential speakers, roster of events)? A note from the OS meeting -- have an idea of the date for the next meeting to keep momentum going.

Allison, Lynn,

If we hold the meeting without Lynn, I'm wondering if there is anyone else currently in Kincardine who is willing to take the led on the transition movement there. I know you're currently in Collingwood Allison, and I don't want to launch something that will falter due to lack of a point person.

Lynn, if we change the date are you willing to be the point person or are you loaded up at the moment?
Is there someone else we should be talking to Allison?

Shane and Allison-sorry for the delay-I've been out of town (and I don't have a laptop!)

I am certainly interested in helping with Transition Kincardine but I'm not sure I can act as the main point person for both Teeswater and Kincardine-there is a considerable amount of time involved in the initial stages of getting the steering committee set up and the initial events planned and presented. The last thing I'd want to do is start something and not see it through and I can't drop Teeswater now that it is going.

If I could suggest two things though- having a free (or VERY inexpensive) place for a growing group of people to meet is really important-because the numbers will grow quickly and since the community building aspect is so important, so is total inclusion. There are alot of people who do not work at Bruce Power in this area who would love to participate in events like this but cannot afford to pay everytime they go to something-in fact, these will generally be a large contingent of the supporters of the initiative. Also important is showing a peak oil film of some sort so they get a very clear understanding of what it is. It's a complex topic and although everyone has heard of climate change, few have an understanding of peak oil (or have even heard of it). The films open those doors very quickly without confusion-people come away knowing exactly what is expected of them and why.

I'd like to think this through and perhaps have some discussion. As for the March 2nd date, that's up to you. I have to be in Toronto for the week for work. I'm certainly up for a conversation about it though.

I realized that I've got a work-related event on March 2 that I'm helping to organize too. Maybe it would be best for us to move the Kincardine meeting to the week after (March 9) - that way Lynne can be there too.

As for a lead in Kincardine - you're right. I am in Collingwood right now, and it would be good to have a lead in Kincardine. I can contact Chrystal Murphy and Janice McKean to see if they're interested.

As for a free venue - I agree this is important. Books and Beans is willing to host us for free right now (although buying drinks is encouraged of course), and I think other venues will be thought of as the ball gets rolling.

I would say check with Crystal and Janice before we move the date, and if one or both of them will run with it, then the 9th works for me. The movement really needs to be driven by Kincardine residents if it is to succeed. We can either show a film, or have speakers, or both, and then the little birdie should be kicked out of the proverbial nest, so to speak, to see if it can fly on its own.

Are you available on the 9th, Lynn?

Am awaiting the dates for my daughter to come home from Calgary for 4 days-assuming it is not the 9th, I will plan to be there! Exciting isn't it?!

Allison-I was told to pass on a friendly hello from Denise...she said you'd know! :) We were talking about TT's the other day and then our conversations merged with your name!

Hi Lynne and Shane,

I contacted a couple of folks from Kincardine who I thought might be interested. Chrystel Murphy who runs Ideal Organics and Janice McKean who does a lot of community work surrounding agriculture. Unfortunately Janice will not be able to help out due to a family member passing away. I have not heard back from Chrystel yet.

Should we wait to confirm a Kincardine lead, or still go ahead and do it?

My thought is to hold for the moment until someone local comes forward to take the reigns. Activity is accelerating across the region so I'm thinking I should focus my time and energy on helping facilitate the projects that are emerging organically. I'm sure something will emerge in Kincardine soon enough.

Yes, I think you're right Shane. I did hear back from Chrystel - she said she is busy with the community garden and other activities. I'm wondering if they're already into the action part of building resilience, and might not feel the need for an intro TT meeting! She did suggest one of us could come and give a presentation to the municipal environmental committee. I'm waiting to hear back when the meeting is.

Let's forget about March 9.
