The LocalMotive Project

Building resilience in the Saugeen Region.

I just came back from Germany and it was interesting to note how the main highways don't go through the towns. Ultimately we don't want highways at all, but wouldn't it make our town much more people friendly, bike friendly, garden friendly etc...  Also it was interesting to see how the bike is treated like a vehicle with rights and respect over there.  There are separate lanes, bike 'parking' lots etc.

hi Monica I posted this earlier today guess it didn't go anywhere not sure how this system works

here's some ideas for small local projects

1. More bicycle paths and bicycle trails and bicycle racks and repair facilities.
This helps healthiness, lowers stress, lowers pollution, saves energy, lowers the speed and increases the pleasure and environment awareness in travelling.

You're right Europe is way ahead of us. In Holland, with a truly huge number of bikers doing all the usual every day stuff, if someone in a vehicle, car or truck hits someone on a bicycle it s the vehicle drivers fault, This law has made drivers of cars etc. take care of bikers and made the roads safe for them cheers Donato
Hi everyone, I learned something today on this subject. The town of Durham owns bike racks. They look like bicycle wheels and are also planter holders. They were hanging on the lamp posts last year. They will be put up for the summer soon but maybe we could get them to leave them up next winter.
That is all for today.

Yesterday , April 23 there were so many bikes out in Durham, it was great!!. Now I see a bike -riksha shuttle service from one end to town to the other, mayebe a bit of electric power to get up the big hill, but other wise all human power.
One part exercise, two parts transportation - people and heavy bags from the L+M. :) Their food delivery could be done that way and that of the food bank as well. Liability insurance raises it's head there, but in time .. tracking down suitable vehicles ....

Yeah you're right but no one seems to know this and they're a peculiar design making it difficult to lock your bike properly. I think the town erred too much on the side of aesthetics (although they disappear from the viewer somehow. Ground level is where we look for bike racks)
