The LocalMotive Project

Building resilience in the Saugeen Region.

Cycle paths in Durham ! YES! I agree Donato...and lots of racks, rentals, repairs shops...

Hi all,

I'm new to this..I totally agree Donato about the bikes---I have no car currently though will in the future again, but will continue to reduce my carbon footprint by cycling to shop for my groceries locally and going to the library, cafe to meet friends, and of course to just enjoy being outdoors for fresh air and exercise.

I began out West (Duncan, Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island) to work with the local governement to set up bike paths right in the town and extending out at least 8 km all around the town so that there was safer and better access to Nature trails and shopping there. I was too ill to complete the project but the town officials were very willing. I would like to try this here, especially with support from a few people here-I am still in healing mode well--anyway it would be better to do this with a few of us, pooling our resources, our strengths.

About that art wall--I would love to paint something about the drum circle I'm trying to keep going--we have already been approved by the Park officials to drum by the Saugeen River on Tuesday nights all Summer!

Love to hear from you all, Janet

Hey Janet , great to see you on the LocalMotive Project.
Finding ways to encourage safe cycling is very important. I am physically not able to be much of a cyclist myself these days but Durham mainstreet with two lanes, parking and car doors opening at any moment does not look like a good street to cycle on to me.

A couple more thoughts on cycling: I wonder if it would be helpful to collect some information about cycling, for example how long does it take to get to say Hanover on a bike , is there a safer road one could travel at least part way on, what kind of a fintness level does on need . Anyone interested to do some of these longer distances together with other people

what about flags / signs, that stick up behind the cyclist for safety and have Transition written on them to make a few hundred people think about what that means .
Also how about a Transition awareness building bike event with one of those big bikes for several people , that travels a bit and stops to distribute material on Transition .
Hey back Dorle,
Smart ideas! Yeah, I need to borrow a car to travel the roads to see which are best to Hanover. Around here at least we could have flags with Transition on them (cool!) and bike racks. Right now I cycle on the sidewalk as I do not feel safe on the main streets with the busy vehicle traffic. I'd love to be part of a bike awareness day. I know the local police even help, at least where I lived they will teach safety and road rules, give out stickers...Good for all ages. Janet
Hi everyone!
That was a great meeting last night! Lots of clear ideas and beginnings of projects---well at least for me and my group (Transpostation) we had some ideas that we can work on right away 1) creating bike/hike trails in town and between towns (to start I am contacting the local Durham cyclist group and also Land Trust people to see how they could help to give land owners who donate their land parcel for trails--possibly to be given a tax break ; 2) create a bike day---I willl approach the local Police and the Lion's Club for help, as well as the cyclist club and a bike repair shop fellow for participation in teaching skills, bike and car safety and rules, fun, health and practical use of bikes...3) make a page (with NING??) for car sharing--a notice board with drivers and riders which changes every month ( someone could be assigned to clean up the board/update it regularly. Does anyone know how much NING would charge for such a page? Can it be part of the Transition Town/LocalMotive pages? IS the latter a good idea or too confusing? What do you think?
I know some people mentioned we must change the legislation of our government to give strict guidelines as to much room cars must give cyclists on the road. How can we approach this? A letter and a petition to the apropriate governing body or person? Let me know.
I look forward to your input on all of the above and any help you can offer as this is a project that needs to be shared for practical reasons and for our community caring! Janet Jephcott 519-369-5994 to talk if that is easier.
