The LocalMotive Project

Building resilience in the Saugeen Region.

I had what I think is a neat idea.  Lots of people participate in re-enactments of historic battles, notable times and whole eras.  There's black-creek pioneer village where kids can go to see how 'real' people lived over one hundred years ago.  What if we were to Pre-Enact what we want or think a post-peak, scarcity community might look like?

I think this project would have two phases.  Phase one is writing and conceptualizing and phase two is the actual 'performance.'

I foresee phase one happening online in some sort of blog-like form where creative folks can just post away as if they were characters living in a future Grey/Bruce post-oil meltdown.  Think of it as a role-playing, or group storytelling.  We could jump through time to suit whatever idea you had.  There doesn't have to be any continuity, though there could be.  At some point we will have a wealth of content that we could adapt into phase 2.

Phase two would be a single day performance that would be a large scale endeavor involving as many people as possible.  I envision a historic reenactment like those that take place in Forts across the country or again, like at Black Creek Pioneer Village.  People dress-up, choose roles for themselves and then we put ourselves on display for the rest of the community.  We could have tour guides to tell the stories and relate the pertinent information about each 'scene' or place.  This event could take place all over the county with a bus shipping visitors from vingette to vingette.  Or it could all happen in one central place if it were to evolve like that.

The goal here is two-fold.  Firstly to envision what a post-oil world could ACTUALLY be like on a daily basis for us here in Grey/Bruce.  And secondarily to expose people to the notion of transition, resiliency and peak-oil.  I like this idea because it can have a lot of drama, including all the scary 'Mad Max' stuff people think about, but can also contain immeasurable hope and practicality.  Who needs guns and bandits when you've created abundance?

Thoughts?  Anyone want to start writing a 'fictional' future with me?

Super-cool idea!
I'll endeavor to start a blog in the upcoming days.  I'll post it here and get the ball rolling...
