Great Core Topic for a Group Exploration!
We need to look at out history here, pre-European invasion, the exploration era, the era of the Queen's Bush Royal Navy Timber reserve, the whole history of aboriginal/crown treaties, the time as territory attached to Wellington County, the formation of Grey County and Bruce County etc., right up to the Harris Government municipal amalgamations. Not to discourage anyone :)
I am particularly interested in the history and tradition of widely organized participatory democracy here. Agnes Macphail's whole system and practices are one of the highlights of this movement here. It is a family tradition for our family too. My father, Arthur Harrison was the Liberal candidate in the 1963 federal election and campaigned on both the Liberal Party's Mike Pearson platform and his own Harrison Plan for North Grey, a participatory democracy system he pledged to implement if elected. I will upload his brochure later.
Locomotive founder Shane Jolley has recently campaigned as a Green Party candidate again emphasizing the participatory local democracy potential, and indeed, this whole site and discussion are here because of that commitment! Thanks so much Shane!
The other dimension of governance beyond the executive/legislative functions we combine in our parliamentary system, is that of justice. We need to be looking at the history and present local practices in the access to, provision of and processes for justice in the context of the Canadian commitment to "peace order and good government."
