The LocalMotive Project

Building resilience in the Saugeen Region.

At the Western Canadian Holistic Management Conference held in Russell, Manitoba, an Ontario couple received their certificate of accreditation to teach Holistic Management.  While there are a number of Certified Educators in western Canada, Tony and Fran McQuail will be the first Certified Educators in Ontario.  Holistic Management is a comprehensive system for making better farm family and business decisions that help generate “Healthy People, Healthy Land, Healthy Profits”.
The McQuails took their first training in how to practice Holistic Management on their farm in a course sponsored by the Ecological Farmers Association of Ontario in 1995.  They were pleased with how HM helped them over the years achieve a healthy balance among the financial, social and ecological aspects of their farm.  While attending Holistic Management conferences in Western Canada they were impressed with the enthusiasm of farm and ranch families effectively coping with challenges like BSE.  They realized HM was a powerful tool and decided to take the training so that it could be more easily available in Ontario.
The McQuails are teaching three courses this spring.  Each are two days long and are being offered in the Guelph area.  The first is an introduction to HM, goal setting and testing guidelines. The second is Holistic Management financial planning and the third is on planned grazing and biological monitoring.  The McQuails are excited about being able to bring Holistic Management to the Ontario farming community.
